Hold Up Art presents Nonsense and Everything that Goes with It, a group show featuring the work of comrades and contemporaries emerging from the art scene in Long Beach, California. The works of Cody Lusby, Ryan Clemens, and Matthew Hodges pop off the gallery walls as the artists incorporate materials used on the street and in the studio space. Spray paint and oil paint are mixed to create renderings of their impressions from urban life: homelessness, modern love, the pursuit of truth, and the reconciliation of the past in the present. The visages of Pablo Picasso, Michel Basquiat, Frida Kahlo, and Salvador Dali appear as heavy-handed outlined portraits and reminders that no matter how far-fetched the applications of materials in Hold Up Art may seem, they have already tried them before. The presence of the modern painters seems a humbling gesture made by Lusby, Clemens, and Hodges.
